The Journey Behind the Projects

Every opportunity I was given shaped the way I now help others.

People often see the finished film, the awards or the credits at the end of a production. What they don’t see is the journey that led there.

Mine didn’t begin on a film set.

It began with being told that I probably wouldn’t achieve very much.

School wasn’t where I thrived. I wasn’t academic, and I struggled in an environment that expected everyone to learn in the same way. Looking back, I now understand that I’m a visual and practical learner. I learn by doing, solving problems and gaining experience rather than simply reading from a book. At the time, however, those differences were often mistaken for a lack of ability.

At the age of sixteen, I left home and began building a life for myself. There was no roadmap and no guarantees. Every opportunity had to be earned, every lesson learned through experience, and every setback became another reason to keep moving forward.

What I discovered very quickly was that determination can often take you further than confidence.

There is something else about my career that surprises people: I have never had a formal job interview in my life.

Interviews didn’t build my career. People seeing me work did.

Someone gave me an opportunity. I showed them what I could do. They recommended me to somebody else, and that recommendation opened another door. My career grew through my work, my reputation and people trusting me enough to give me the next opportunity.

That experience has had a profound influence on how I see talent.

I firmly believe there are incredibly capable people who miss opportunities because they don’t perform particularly well in an interview, don’t have the right connections, don’t look right on paper or simply haven’t yet been given the chance to demonstrate what they can actually do.

Worse still, some people stop trying in the first place. If you are repeatedly made to feel that you don’t fit the expected mould, eventually it becomes very easy to believe that the opportunity simply isn’t meant for you.

I know that ability and potential cannot always be measured by how somebody performs in a room, what qualifications they have or how confidently they can talk about what they might be capable of. Sometimes you have to give somebody the opportunity to show you.

My career in the entertainment industry began in casting, where I founded my first casting agency, Act One Scene One. It was there that I discovered something that has stayed with me throughout my career: I genuinely enjoy helping people find opportunities.

Watching someone land their first role, seeing a production come together or helping solve a problem behind the scenes gave me a sense of purpose that has never left me.

Over the years, that passion led me into almost every aspect of filmmaking. I worked in casting, production coordination, production management, producing and consultancy, gaining experience across feature films, television, commercials and international productions. Every role taught me something different, and every production reinforced the importance of preparation, teamwork and resilience.
